Play! by Sephora review December, 2016

Play! By Sephora is a subscription box that delivers a box of 5 deluxe samples, a fragrance sample and a collectible bag to your door every month.

This review is for the December Play! By Sephora box.

The Goods

  1. Soothing Primer – Makeup Forever. Regular price: $5.92

Prep skin for your makeup routine with Step 1 Skin Equalizer Primers, and address your skin concerns with this innovative makeup primer. Perfect for balancing skin and achieving an ideal makeup result, it’s lightweight and creamy, leaving a more evenly-toned appearance, and increases foundation’s hold. This primer for all skin tones leaves makeup looking fresh for hours while it hydrates, firms, and smooths the look of the skin. This primer works good, but leaves a dry, grimey feeling I didn’t like much. This is only the second primer that has felt this way to me.

  1. Smokey Eye Mascara – Bobbi Brown. Regular price: $15.00

This is a kohl-pigmented mascara that delivers instant volume and super-saturated length for dramatically dark, stretched-out lashes. This creamy  mascara builds volume lash by lash, as opposed to traditional volumizing formulas that create the appearance of volume by clumping lashes together. The result is thicker, longer, bolder lashes in an instant—the perfect complement to any eye look. This mascara did what it was supposed to so long as I took it easy. Too much and it would clump, but I guess that’s the case with most mascaras. I’ll definitely use this until it’s gone, though.

  1. Cream Lip Stain in Always Red – Sephora. Regular price: $3.50

A silky, long-lasting lip stain that keeps lips covered with bold color from AM to PM—no need to reapply or touch up throughout the day.
This bestselling, high-coverage lip color glides on smooth and transforms from a creamy texture into a silky, lightweight stain. Infused with avocado oil, the long-lasting formula delivers rich color that feels comfortable, is never sticky, and won’t dry out lips. I just won’t touch red lipstick, I can’t pull it off. I will give this one to a friend.

  1. Bay Breeze Hydrating Shot – Drybar. Regular price: $9.50

The ultimate thirst quencher for hair—Bay Breeze Hydrating Shots are a revolutionary way to deeply hydrate dry hair. These single-use shots penetrate the hair to deliver a dose of professional-strength moisture. The treatment rehydrates hair from roots to ends for lasting moisture, leaving hair silky-soft, shiny, detangled, and healthy-looking. To use this I sprayed a whole bottle in my hair as directed, waited 5 mins and rinsed. It did leave my hair more soft and moisturized. But I won’t buy this on my own just because one use is so expensive.

  1. All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray – Urban Decay. Regular price: $4.00

Developed in an exclusive partnership with SKINDINÄVIA, our groundbreaking, clinically tested formula is suitable for all skin types and features patented Temperature Control Technology. Yep, this baby actually lowers the temperature of your makeup to keep foundation, eyeshadow, blush and concealer in place – even in hot and humid or cold and windy conditions. The result? Smoother-looking skin and vibrant makeup that lasts all day. Yesterday this did help my makeup last all day, when I removed my makeup at the end of the day there was way more on the wipes than usual. That tells me the spray helped my makeup stay on and in place.

  1. Nirvana Bourbon Perfume – Elizabeth and James. Regular price: $4.99

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon is a provocative blend of sultry vanilla bourbon, oakwood, and a hint of tuberose for a bold, oriental-woody scent with intoxicating confidence. Bringing a lightness to Nirvana, the amber toned bottle with rich gold accents blends feminine curves with contrasting architectural lines. I actually did like the subtle, sexy scent of this perfume. I have to give it away anyways because perfume gives me headaches. But it is nice!

The value of the products in this month’s box is around $42.91. I even used the prices for the samples I received, not the full sized products, so this is the true value and I’d say it’s a steal! The box is only $10.00/month, so 4x the value is pretty good. The only product I really won’t use is the fragrance, I don’t wear perfume so it’s kind of a bummer every box includes it. But I did love the other samples! The primer is great and the makeup setting spray is amazing. Not sure why this box gets such a bad rep… I am happy with mine.

There is usually a waiting list for this box, so you can sign up for the waiting list here. I was on it for two weeks before I got my email, which was not long to wait at all.
